The Alta Mountain Bike Club, in their fourth year in action, was confidant the team being successful coming into the 2015 season. After two races, one in Midway and another in Draper, they have been successful.
Starting the season off in Midway, Utah in the resort of Soldier Hollow, the team came out competitively. They came away with three first place finishes; Bryn Bingham for freshmen boys, Morgan Hales for freshmen girls, and Heather Horton for junior varsity girls. Other notable finishes by Ellise Shuman, fourth in varsity girls, and Adam Jolley who got second in freshmen boys. The team finished fourth overall in Division ! behind Corner Canyon, Lone Peak, and Park City High Schools.
A few weeks later, they competed on home trails and finished with similar results to the first race. Again, they finished fourth, but with less impressive finishes by key riders. Bryn Bingham, Morgan Hales, and Heather Horton remain point leaders in their categories heading into the next race in Moab, Utah
Corner Canyon High School, after being constructed over three years ago, has become a natural rival to nearby Alta High School. The students have always clashed with one another on the subject of superiority. Due to the difference in sports divisions, the two schools have never been able to compete against each other until last Tuesday (September 8, 2015) in girl’s soccer.
The game had quite the showing from both school’s student sections because of the fact that they’ve never competed at that level before. After 45 minutes into play, the score was 4-0 for Alta. The Corner Canyon High School student section had become nearly silent after watching their team be dominated. With a final score of 5-3 at the end of play, Alta had become victorious.
Still, after the completed game, Corner Canyon has become bitter and fights on social media websites have occurred. Students from both schools are anticipating the future of athletic competition to prove which high school is truly more dominant.
The Alta Mountain Bike Club competed in their first race in Solider Hollow Resort last Saturday, August 29th. They competed on a strenuous course that woundthrough the surrounding hills on public mountain bike trails, ranging from 5-6 miles per lap. Over 40 schools from around the state attended, including rivals Park City High School and Corner Canyon High School.
After hours of racing, Alta came away with three victories including Bryn Bingham (Freshmen Boys), Morgan Hales (Freshmen Girls), and Heather Horton (JV Girls). Thesewere the most victories taken by a single team out of all attending schools.
Alta came away with fourth overall; just behind third place, Park City. The team hopes to redeem themselves in a few weeks in their next race in Draper, where they will be racing where they practice on the Corner Canyon Trail System, just above the Andy Ballard Equestrian Center.
